Castle of
Montvéran.
Bérold de Saxe drove the Saracens away from the
rock of Monvéran around the year one thousand. The
actual castle was built on this same rock in 1316 by Pierre de
Lurieu. In 1595 it was partly damaged by the Biron armies but
nevertheless was still habitable. In 1653 restoration was
carried out on the rampart and in 1687 on the castle itself.
The castle has remained the same apart from the
modification of the towers pulled down at the end of the
Revolution (Albitte decree). They were rebuilt about
fifty years later in a romantic style whereas before they were
crenellated. At this same period, the East tower was destroyed
and replaced by the little lookout turret.
The High Constable of Bourbon took refuge there
when he left the French monarchist state. The Serpollet
brothers worked there with their father before inventing their
steam generator (motorcar).
According to his close acquaintances Serge
Prokofiev was inspired by this setting, he stayed there between
1928 and 1929. Henriette d'Angeville, who climbed Mont Blanc in
1838, was amongst the regular visitors to
Montvéran.
